What is Dengue Fever and how to prevent it (2025)

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. It is common in tropical and subtropical regions and can cause mild to severe illness.

Mosquitoes bite on adult hand made skin rash and allergy with red spot

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Symptoms usually appear 4-10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and can include:

• High fever (up to 104°F or 40°C)

• Severe headaches

• Pain behind the eyes

• Joint and muscle pain (also called “breakbone fever”)

• Skin rash

• Nausea and vomiting

• Fatigue

Severe Dengue (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever/Dengue Shock Syndrome)

In severe cases, dengue can lead to:

• Internal bleeding

• Difficulty breathing

• Low blood pressure (shock)

• Organ failure

Severe dengue is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.

How to Prevent Dengue Fever

Since there is no specific cure for dengue, prevention is key:

1. Avoid Mosquito Bites

Use insect repellent – Apply repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil.

Wear protective clothing – Long-sleeved shirts and pants help prevent bites.

Sleep under mosquito nets – Especially important in high-risk areas.

2. Control Mosquito Breeding

Eliminate standing water – Empty and clean containers like buckets, plant saucers, and tires that collect water.

Cover water storage – Use lids or nets to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Use larvicides – Chemical or biological larvicides can kill mosquito larvae in water.

3. Protect Your Home

Install window and door screens – Prevent mosquitoes from entering.

Use mosquito coils or vaporizers – Helps keep mosquitoes away indoors.

4. Get Vaccinated (If Available)

• Some countries offer the Dengvaxia vaccine for people with a history of dengue infection. It’s not widely available for first-time infections.
